The irony begot is the question of why would a medical technician, someone who helps to save lives, be hunting and taking a life of another living organism? Alas, Killian has all the hunting gear and though the reader could possibly question his motives (possibly to check for the absolute death of someone he attempted to kill?), the possibility of the well-known medical technician being a murderer is slim. A medical technician is someone certified to treat a patient before they reach the healthcare facility. A fourth source of irony is one of the members of the party that discovered McCandless’s boy: an emergency medical technician fro a fire department, named Butch Killian. Although not complete irony because Chris would not have been able to kill or cook the forest creatures, but the food was available to Chris and he died due to hunger (as well as to the cold temperatures and the lack of drinkable hunger). A third source of irony is that Chris McCandless was searching for berries, even though six different hunters came to the bus site to hunt for various game. Another source of irony is seen with his note to wait for him when he gets back from scavenging for berries, even though Chris’s body was located inside of the deserted bus. Krakauer ironically states how 6 people are visiting the death site of Chris McCandless, whereas he was only trying to get out of the cold horror that is the frozen forests of Alaska. At the beginning of the chapter, the reader understands that Krakauer is going to describe where Chris’s body lays, who stumbled upon his body, and the details surrounding his death.
Jon Krakauer begins chapter 2 with “Graffito carved into a piece of wood discovered at the site of Chris McCandless’s death” (Krakauer 9).
